Toronto readers may have heard about the tragic death of a Toronto teenager who died in a Windsor street fight recently, but what is surprising is that only one person has been arrested on suspicion of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. Should he be charged with any other violent crimes, he could be facing a very serious punishment.
What is odd about the Windsor police department’s decision to only arrest one person is that 10 people were believed to have been involved in the street fight, including the young man who died. So, how do they know that the man who was arrested played a pivotal role in the fight or in the 19-year-old university student’s death? What evidence do they have that indicate the detainee should be arrested but the others shouldn’t?
The 30-year-old man who police arrested is from Windsor. Though he is facing a weapons charge, it is not entirely clear what weapon police believe he had the night of the fight. Moreover, The Globe and Mail has not said what the weapon was actually used in the fight.
It seems that at least some of the fight was recorded by security cameras and the footage is being reviewed. Perhaps this footage can be used to show that the man who was arrested actually played a minor role (or that he had no role at all) in the fight; perhaps it could also be used to show that others are more deserving of their attention. As it is, arresting only one person for a 10-person brawl raises questions about police motives.
