There are multiple activities involving drugs that could result in criminal charges. One need not be in possession of them for charges to be filed. An Ontario man is facing this reality now. He was arrested after a package that was in transit to his home was seized. The package contained 1.8 kilograms of opium.

The package, which originally came from Iran, went through Heathrow Airport in London. From there the international package was tracked to its destination, allegedly the home of the accused.

Following the man’s arrest he was charged with:

  • Trafficking opium
  • Possession for the purpose of trafficking opium
  • Conspiracy to import a controlled substance
  • Importing a controlled substance

The 52 year old was not the only one who faced drug charges in connection with the incident. Following his arrest, law enforcement secured a search warrant for his residence and allegedly found marijuana there. A 19-year-old man who was there at the time was arrested. He was charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking.

While both men could face significant penalties if convicted, the consequences are usually harsher where charges connected to heroin, doda or other opiates are concerned. In addition to a long jail sentence significant fines and other collateral consequences could result.

The best way to try to avoid such an outcome is to build a strong defence. Working with a lawyer who practices in the area of criminal defence is the best way to do so. Even if he or she cannot secure an acquittal to the charges, they may be of assistance in minimizing the severity of the penalties.
