While all criminal accusations should be taken seriously, there are certain crimes for which this even more important. Actions that are considered sex crimes fall into this category. This is due to the serious penalties that could be assessed if someone is found guilty of the offence.

Sometimes people who are of interest in a criminal case are not always immediately charged with the crime. This is a stressful place for a suspect to be, particularly if that individual did not commit the crime for which he or she is being investigated. After a certain amount of time passes, that individual may feel as though he or she is in the clear. As the recent arrest of a Toronto man illustrates, if the case is still open, this is not true.

The now 71-year-old man was arrested and charged with sexual assault. Specifically he has been accused of rape, indecent assault and intercourse with a female under 14. The man allegedly sexually assaulted a 5-year-old girl that he was babysitting. That alleged incident occurred more than 30 years ago. He is accused of continuing the illegal activities for three more years.

Authorities believe that it is possible that the man may have done similar things with other children in the neighborhood he also babysat.

How strong the case against the accused actually is, remains to be seen. As is the case with every criminal charge, evidence will play a vital role at trial. In many situations the more time that has passed, the harder such a case is to prove. Despite this, it is important for anyone who is facing a criminal charge to mount an aggressive defence. The first step is to meet with a criminal defence lawyer.
