Courts in Ontario treat any drug offences as serious crimes. Regardless of the severity of the charges, be it possession of a small amount of marijuana or drug trafficking of large amounts of illegal substances, penalties may be steep if a person is convicted. Having an experienced criminal defence lawyer on one’s side can help ensure that any accused individual proceeds with the best possible defense strategy.
Police arrested a 46-year-old woman on a recent Saturday evening. They charged her with fentanyl trafficking, possession of criminally obtained property and causing bodily harm to another individual. This followed the response of police and paramedics to a residence at which a person almost died from a suspected overdose of fentanyl. The victim was a man who was taken to a hospital after emergency workers administered a reversing agent for treatment of opiate overdoses.
According to police, the victim said he had purchased and used the white substance. After allegedly finding a small amount of it at his home, they obtained a search warrant and searched another residence. At the other residence, they claim to have seized evidence, including drug paraphernalia, before arresting the suspect.
Fentanyl is an opiate that is used in the treatment of long-term pain, and its strength exceeds that of morphine by 100 times and heroin by 50 times. Because of the dangers posed by fentanyl, convictions on charges involving it can bring severe penalties, including possible jail time. Still, being charged with a drug offense or other crime is far from being convicted. Those living in Ontario who are accused of drug trafficking can significantly increase the odds of obtaining the best possible outcome from their legal cases by acquiring the help of a skilled criminal defence lawyer.
