When the average person is arrested and accused of committing a crime he or she may feel as though the cards are stacked against them. They may also feel as though not having a thorough understanding of the criminal justice system puts them at a disadvantage. Fortunately criminal defence lawyers are there to assist those who find themselves in this situation. The reality is anyone who has been accused of a crime–including those who have an intimate knowledge of the criminal justice system because they work in it–should contact a criminal defence lawyer.

A Toronto area police officer likely did this very thing following his recent arrest. The 41-year-old was charged following raids that were conducted early one morning following an ongoing investigation dubbed Project Pharaoh. The operation was designed to dismantle the Monstarz gang.

The operation resulted in law enforcement executing 50 search warrants and arresting 60 people. In the course of the raids police seized five vehicles, 14 firearms and drugs with a street value of $3.8 million.

Specifically the man, who has been with the police service for 16 years, is charged with:

  • Breach of trust.
  • Conspiracy to traffic cocaine.
  • Participating in a criminal organization.
  • Commission of an indictable offence for a criminal organization.

Prior to these most recent charges the man was suspended with pay from his job. This occurred in June 2012 when he was charged of breach of trust and obstruction of justice tied to another incident.

There is no question that if the man is found guilty of the new charges the penalty will be harsh. Accordingly, it is likely that he is taking steps to do what is necessary to defend himself from the charges as anyone else who faced similar charges would.
