Sex crimes are among the most frowned upon misdeeds with which a person can be charged. Simply being associated with an accusation of sexual assault can turn a person’s world upside down. That recently happened for a man and a woman charged by Toronto Police last month.

Toronto Police Services were looking into an alleged abuse case involving a child living a couple of hours southwest of the city. The investigation transpired in Jan. 2016, but the alleged assault took place between 12 and 14 years ago. Police allege two men arranged to sexually abuse a child with the child’s parents via online communication. The assault purportedly happened in a London, Ontario home.

After the execution of a search warrant, the first suspect was arrested in London on Jan. 25. Officers in Kingston made the second arrest on Feb. 1. A 56-year-old man was charged with sexual interference and sexual assault. A 46-year-old woman, who was a man at the time of the alleged assault, was also arrested and charged with sexual interference and sexual assault.

The length of time that has passed could make this a complicated case. Historical crimes require care and patience to defend effectively. Anyone accused of sexual assault, whether in the distant past or more recently, should respond with an appropriate level of seriousness. A good way to start might be to contact a lawyer as early in the proceedings as possible. The experience of a lawyer who knows the courts of Toronto and laws of the land may prove to be invaluable.
