Sometimes being in the wrong place at the wrong time can have unexpectedly dire consequences. Regardless of an individual’s intentions, it may be that the actions of another place him or her in a difficult position. A Toronto man recently accused of drug trafficking found this out firsthand.

Kingston Police were following a suspected local drug trafficker on Sept. 1, 2016. The suspect made his way to the VIA Rail station on John Counter Boulevard where he was observed meeting with a second man who had just arrived on a train from the Toronto area. The second man was carrying a bag, and the two made their way to the first suspect’s nearby vehicle.

Police intercepted the men at around 5:30 p.m. before they entered the vehicle. The pair was arrested on reasonable grounds that they possessed controlled substances for trafficking. Police searched the two men, the bag and the vehicle at the scene.

The search of the bag turned up quantities of cocaine and marijuana worth around $6,000, as well as four cellphones and $295 in cash. The Kingston man had on him quantities of several drugs, including crystal meth, and crack cocaine. A bag of marijuana was found in the car, bringing the total value of drugs in the Kingston suspect’s possession to about $3,400. The two men were held overnight and each charged with possessing a controlled substance with the intention of trafficking. The Toronto man was also charged with two counts of breaching his probation.

The multiplicity of charges now faced by the two individuals will be difficult to defend against, especially given the quantity of evidence. Nevertheless, there must be due process, and each man will have his day in court. A charge of drug trafficking can be extremely intimidating for anyone. Partnering with a criminal defense law firm may make the situation a little less frightening.
