As has been mentioned in this blog before, media scrutiny makes it difficult for anyone accused of a crime to lead a normal life. Although any person suspected of committing a crime is innocent until and unless shown to be otherwise, that will not prevent the media from circulating the name and photograph of someone accused of a crime. It’s a difficult situation for any person, but that shouldn’t prevent him or her from pursuing justice. A recent example involves a Toronto man charged with two counts of sexual assault.
The first incident allegedly took place somewhere between June 1 and July 31, 2016. A woman alleges a man approached her as she walked in the area of Ridley Boulevard and Wilson Avenue. She claims he struck up a conversation with her before sexually assaulting her. He then reportedly followed her to another location as she sought help.
On May 15, 2017, a second woman claims a man was staring intently at her as she sat with friends near Haddington Avenue and Avenue Road. She reported feeling uncomfortable, so she left the area. Allegedly, the man followed her and showed her explicit pictures. He is purported to have sexually assaulted her after they arrived at another location, and exposed his private parts to her multiple times before she fled. Both the women were said to be noticeably pregnant.
Police arrested a 30-year-old Toronto man in connection with both incidents in mid-May. He faces three charges of committing an indecent act and two for sexual assault. He also faces a charge of criminal harassment.
An individual accused of sexual assault may face an uphill battle in court, and then re-establish his or her reputation. It’s a difficult situation to be in, but not an impossible one. By working with a good criminal defence lawyer, it may be possible to effectively defend against such accusations.
